OES chapter awards scholarships

Sisters of Bivouac Chapter #530, Order of the Eastern Star’s Scholarship Committee awarded two $500 scholarships to two students in Forsyth County.
One scholarship was awarded to Saharia Porter, a 2015 graduate of Carver High School and one to NiGeria Barnes-Johnston, a 2015 graduate of Winston Salem Preparatory Academy. Saharia will be attending Johnson C. Smith University in the fall and NiGeria will be attending Forsyth Technical Community College in the fall and then to a four-year accredited college. Sisters of Bivouac Chapter #530, OES, is a Prince Hall Affiliate that strives to better the lives of people in the community through service to others.
Under the leadership of Lisa W. Smith as Worthy Matron and David Peay as Worthy Patron, the chapter’s theme continues to be “Stars Shining Light Throughout The Community.” The chapter provides needed community service to various organizations in the community.
“Awarding these scholarships to these deserving young ladies is the uplift the chapter seeks to provide to high school students as they inspire to better themselves as they seek knowledge and further their education, as well as teach them about giving back to others in the community,” the chapter said in a statement. Hattie B. Fulton serves as chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.
