The altruism of Miricale McKoy, an eight-year-old second grader at Middle Fork Elementary School, has earned the love of the community.

Born premature, her name was aptly earned. She has blossomed into a miracle child with a huge heart, great love for the Lord and a genuine desire to help those in need.

Miricale’s desire to help was nurtured when she was five and invited to help her grandmother, Dee McKoy, and her uncles, LeWun and LeNard, deliver Meals on Wheels.  She immediately bonded with the elderly meal recipients, and they were excited to see her each day.

The experience sparked an even deeper calling. On the coldest day of this year,  Miricale became very concerned about those she had witnessed on the streets who had no  permanent shelter.  Without hesitation, she asked her grandmother if she could collect blankets for the homeless, “because this is what God wants me to do.”

Overjoyed with the idea, her grandmother told her she would ask around to see who might assist in this effort. Dee McKoy reached out to Dr. Nathan E. Scovens, pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, and he immediately agreed to ask the congregation to support Miricale’s request.

The outpouring was overwhelming. More than 100 blankets were collected and delivered by Galilee Director of Ministry Chad Armstrong and Deacon O’Lou Brown to the Bethesda Center for the Homeless.

As a result of the successful effort, Pastor Scovens and the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church family have generously agreed to join in partnership with the newly founded Miricales Do Happen Ministry. This will be the church’s 60th mission program. Miricale is thrilled about the response and continues to pray daily that more lives and families in need can be reached through the ministry.
