Medicare help available
The Shepherd’s Center’s Kernersville Senior Enrichment Center, 130 E. Mountain St., will host a “Medicare Low Income Subsidy Assistance” event on Thursday, April 17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The Medicare Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) – or Extra Help Program – helps qualified Medicare recipients pay for their Medicare prescription drug program costs, such as premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. No appointment is necessary.
The low income assistance may assist with the elimination of a Part D coverage gap (donut hole), the opportunity to change Prescription Drug Plans at any time as well as reduced Part D premiums, plan deductibles and copays, which can range from $2.65 to $6.60.
Eligibility guidelines for assistance are based on income and assets that change from year to year. The current eligibility guidelines for this type of assistance are $1,458.75 in income and $13,440 in assets for an individual and $1,966.25 in income and $26,860 in assets for a married couple. Assets that are NOT counted in determining eligibility are a person’s home, car and burial assets of up to $1,500 in value per person.
Trained Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors will be available to assist in the simple application process.
