The Winston Lake Family YMCA will present its 17th Annual Black Achievers in Business & Industry Awards Gala on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, 5095 Lansing Drive.
Dozens of adult professionals will be honored for their dedication to business and community, but youth achievers, college-bound high school seniors who have taken advantage of the opportunities offered through the Black Achievers program, will take center-stage. Many of them will receive scholarships during the program, which is expected to draw an array of city leaders and other notables.
Distinguished Service Awards will also be presented to those who have rendered strong leadership and service to the community.
Rev. Derwin L. Montgomery will deliver the keynote address. He represents the East Ward on the Winston-Salem City Council. In 2009, when he was a 21-year-old Winston-Salem State University senior, Montgomery became one of the youngest people in the nation elected to a city or town governing body. In 2012, he was named the pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church.
Tickets to the gala are $40 for adults and $30 for those 12 and under.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Winston Lake Family YMCA, 901 Waterworks Rd. For more information, contact Andrea Y. Hicks at 336-724-9205 or a.hicks@ymcanwnc.org.
