Art and math collide at gallery

Local students spent part of a recent Saturday at Winston-Salem State University’s Diggs Gallery for “Discovering Math through Art.”
The program, led by artist Vandorn Hinnant, was designed to introduce young people to the geometry-rich works of art by North Carolina artists John and James Biggers and the other artists featured in WSSU’s public art collection.
Students viewed the murals in the C. G. O’Kelly library and learned about geometry, fractals and symmetry. After a lesson on natural geometry, they used fresh and dried vegetation to create colorful mandalas. Several of their creations will be exhibited at the United States Department of Education in Washington, D.C. this summer when Diggs Gallery is recognized for its innovative k-12 programs
