The Centennial Parade Planning Committee is inviting residents and business owners in Winston-Salem to participate in the Centennial Celebration Parade, and to nominate others who they deem worthy of the honor.

Five hundred citizens will have the honor of participating in the parade, counting 400 citizens representing the city’s eight wards, and 100 “honored citizens,” said Susan Morris of the planning committee. Participants will be walking the 1.5 mile, paved route. The route is wheelchair accessible.

“In the spirit of inclusivity, and in an effort to have equal representation from all areas of the city, a delegation of 50 walkers will be selected from each of the city’s wards,” Morris said. Citizens may apply to represent their ward. No more than 10 people from any given group or organization will be selected. An entrant’s ward will be determined by the address on the walking entry application, which will be reviewed by the parade committee, Morris said.

“In addition, we will have a special walking group honoring 100 people who have made a significant, positive impact on Winston-Salem, such as veterans, community leaders and local heroes,”Morris said.

Nominations will be collected from the community. Self-nominations will not be accepted. All participants in the Centennial Celebration Parade will receive a certificate of participation signed by Mayor Allen Joines.
