Class improves scores drastically
The students in Dorothy Jackson’s Civics and Economics class at Carver High School have earned the second highest scores in the county for the fall semester.
In the previous semester, the students placed at just 51 percent proficiency. During the fall semester, Jackson collaborated with Regina Huntley, Raquel Wilkins, Artanzia Acker and Gregory Scales of the Exceptional Children’s Department; Lori Pearson of the English Language Learner’s Department; and social studies coach Melissa McGrady to prepare her students. As a result, the students’ score rose to 69 percent proficiency.

In honor of their success, a local Sonic restaurant rewarded the students with fruit-flavored slushes on Friday, Feb. 22, and Assistant Principals Robin Willard and Barbara Burke presented each student a certificate of achievement during lunch.
“My students were so amazed that they had such great success,” said Jackson. “I attribute their success to their willingness to work with the team. I knew that my children had done well, but I did not know how well.”
Jackson has taught at Carver for nine of her 25 years in education. She was Carver’s Teacher of the Year for the 2008-09 school year. She earned her BS degree from Charleston Southern University and a Master of Teaching degree from The Citadel.
