Lane, Smith named top Rams
Winston-Salem State University Athletics named student-athletes Brittany Lane and Kameron Smith as the top female and male student-athletes for the 2012-13 year.
The honors were announced during the Department of Athletics’ Student-Athlete Awards Banquet at the Benton Convention Center on April 24. CIAA Commissioner Jacque Carpenter was the keynote speaker for the event.
Softball player Lane won the Mary Garber Female Student-Athlete of the Year after completing her final season as a Lady Ram. She garnered All-Rookie Team and All-CIAA recognition during her tenure and was selected as the 2013 CIAA Player of the Year. She is a right handed pitcher who has more than 600 career strike outs, and led the CIAA in strikeouts and ERA (earned run average) for the past three years. She was a dedicated member of the English Department Club during her years at WSSU, and is a committed volunteer with her team and church. Lane is a native of Virginia Beach, Va. who will receive her degree from Winston-Salem State University this summer.
Mary Garber Male Student-Athlete of the Year Smith has been the catalyst of the “Big Ram Scoring Machine.” The football player led his team to a 14-1 season and accumulated 7,080 yards of total offense in his career. In 2012, he threw for 3,312 yards and 43 touchdowns, and is now WSSU’s career passing leader in only three years with the Rams. Smith, a two-time All-CIAA performer, was also selected the 2013 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year.
