AAU team continues strong season
The Winston-Salem Mavericks 11U Basketball Team finished third in the D3 AAU Championship Basketball Tournament, which was played in Burlington from May 4-5.
In their first game, the Mavericks defeated the Swish City Magic of Garner. They beat the NC Runnin Rebels of Raleigh next, but fell short in their third contest, losing to WCBA of Wake County.
A win would have put the team in the Championship Game; instead, the Mavericks returned to court to play for third place against the Carolina Thunder of Concord; a contest the Mavs won.
With the latest win, the team now has two third-place finishes, a second-place finish and three first-place championships out of the six tournaments it has played this year. The Mavericks will be heading to Hampton, Va. to participate in the D3 Nationals from July 4–8.
The team is coached and owned by Mike Gonzalez and Willie “BB” Patrick Jr. The assistant coaches are Antonio Wardlow and Nathen Belcher. The team’s motto is “Play Hard, Play Crazy, Win it All.” The Mavericks are sponsored by Top Priority Care Services and several other local businesses and churches.
