“We just know inside that we’re queens, and these are the crowns we wear.”
These are the closing lines of the musical production “Crowns,” which is based on a bestselling book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry and centers around life stories of real Triad-area women.
The North Carolina Black Repertory Company sponsored a Sunday Best Hat Contest last month to coincide with its staging of Regina Taylor’s “Crowns.” More than 25 women participated.
The top two winners were Pearline Howard and Rev. Beatrice Murray, both of whom attend Emmanuel Baptist Church. Howard donned a black satin brim, while Murray sported a gold honeycomb-style crown.
The judges of the contest were Annie “Mama Marvtastic” Hamlin Johnson, Justin Hall and Cathy Wood.
