Carver High School held Senior Awards Day on May 24.

The Class of 2013 will attend colleges and universities far and wide, including North Carolina Central University, Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Spelman College, Ferrum College, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Forsyth Technical Community College.
Jada Hairston received many scholarships, including one from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She will attend Atlanta’s Spelman College to major in chemistry. She plans to become a dermatologist.

“As a student at Carver High School, I was encouraged to do my best; I know I’m equipped to be a college graduate,” Jada said.

Anthony Pinson will attend Virginia’s Ferrum College to study business administration. He said Carver has prepared him for college.
“The teachers at Carver have been very supportive; they encouraged me to do my best and supported me when I needed it,” he said.

Karolyn Carroll was chosen as the HanesBrands, Inc. Student of the Year. She plans to attend Forsyth Technical Community College to study nursing.
Drew Wilson, another well-decorated senior, will attend N.C. A&T to study economics.

“As director of Student Services, one of my responsibilities is to avail our students of the many scholarship opportunities. We continue to receive college commitments daily; however, I think we are doing fine. We are over $2 million with only 160 seniors,” said Tonya Withers. “This is a testament to our principal. He reinforces the importance of academic success to our students daily.”

Principal Ronald Travis is excited that Carver’s academic reputation is beginning to rival its athletic prowess.

“I understand that Carver High School has received a great deal of notoriety for producing high school students who receive athletic scholarships. While that is important, we must also recognize that Carver also produces many students each year who attend college based solely on academic ability,” he said.

Several community leaders were also recognized during the celebration for their contributions to Carver High School. They included Mayor Pro-Tempore Vivian Burke, County Commissioner Walter Marshall, former Carver principal Nathaniel Barber, retired principal Dr. Nelson Sherouse and School Board Member Victor Johnson.
