The Guiding Institute for Developmental Education (GIDE)/Youth Education Academy Yellow Jackets basketball and cheerleading teams had a successful season this year, winning the 2013 Public Housing Authority State Athletic Conference (PHASAC) state championships in both basketball and cheerleading.

PHASAC was founded by Bill McClain, the current program director of the Guiding Institute for Developmental Education, and David Meachem, executive director of the Statesville Housing Authority, in 1990 for basketball players and cheerleaders who do not participate on high school teams. It is for students ages 14 to 18.

This year, 10 teams participated in the PHASAC championship: Statesville (with two teams), Greensboro (with two teams), Burlington, Asheboro, Concord, High Point, Lexington and Winston-Salem. The event was held in Burlington.

The Yellow Jackets, affiliated with the GIDE /YEA, only lost one basketball game during their regular season and tied for the regular season championship title. In January, the basketball team won both the SERC (South East Regional Conference for housing authorities) tournament and the preseason PHASAC tournament.

Yellow Jacket Ivan Smith won tournament MVP, and Jonathan Cunningham won the three-point Tournament Shoot-Out. The cheerleading team, coached by Deirde Smith and D’ante Crews, found similar success, beating Concord, Burlington and Greensboro to win the 2013 PHASAC Championship Title.
