The Tiny Rams are making a strong claim as the team to beat in the 8th Grade Unlimited Division of the Piedmont Youth Football and Cheer League. Even though they’re the only undefeated team in their division, it remains to be seen if they can unseat the Forsyth County Broncos, who won last year’s league championship.

In a 46-0 victory over the Grayhounds last week, the Tiny Rams (3-0) exploded for five touchdowns in the first half to put the game out of reach. Tenacious defense set the tone from the opening kickoff.

The Tiny Rams got their first score of the game when Tahliek Garnes’ body-slamming tackle forced a Grayhounds fumble. Ryan Cooper recovered the ball and ran it back 42 yards for a touchdown. The defense scored again on a fumble recovery to put the Tiny Rams up 14-0 with 5:06 left in the first quarter.

The early flurry proved to be too much for the Grayhounds to overcome.

The Tiny Rams controlled every facet of the game but Coach Angela Lambson cautioned that winning is not an automatic. “None of our games are easy,” she said. “That’s just the way things turned out this time. Our job as coaches is to help our kids stay disciplined so that they play to their maximum potential. We understand that by making sure that everybody has the right attitude, we can go a long way.”

Offensively, the Tiny Rams, who led 33-0 at the half, were close to unstoppable. Quarterback Anthony Hicks threw for two touchdowns and scored on a one-yard run. Late in the first quarter, Hicks fired a 29-yard scoring pass to Braxton Rorie. On the final play of the first half, he rolled to his right and threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Mahliek Garnes in the right corner of the end zone.

After building a sizable lead at intermission, the Tiny Rams focused mostly on their ground game.  Mashion Powell scored from 28 yards out with time running out in the third quarter. Mahlik Garnes provided the final points of the day when he broke several tackles on an 11-yard touchdown run.

“Things are going well this season,” said Lambson. “But just because we’re winning doesn’t mean that we can afford to be complacent. We have to keep placing a big emphasis on eliminating mistakes and continuing to get better.”
