New softball coach at A&T
Kenya Peters is the new head softball coach at North Carolina A&T. Peters comes to A&T from Savannah State, where she was an assistant coach for two seasons.
“I’m excited about coming to North Carolina A&T and being a part of the Aggie family and community,” said Peters. “I’m looking forward to evaluating our talent, seeing where we are as a program and where we need to go in order to begin establishing Aggie Pride and a winning mentality within the program. I want to thank the Aggie Athletics department, namely (Athletics Director) Mr. Earl Hilton and (Senior Woman Administrator) Ms. Katreshia Louis-Verrett, for this great opportunity.”
Peters helped Savannah State to a pair of 20-plus win seasons. In only their second appearance in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference softball tournament, the Tigers fell one game short of the title game. Peters’ additional duties at SSU included overseeing the softball operating budget, monitoring academic progress of student-athletes, and managing the day-to-day tasks of the program.
The Gautier, Miss., native began her coaching career at Jackson State. The program showed vast improvement after a three-year rebuilding effort, as the Tigers led the nation in doubles per game. In 2007, Peters was selected as a “Who’s Who, Among American Teachers and Educators.” She left Jackson State in 2010 with 118 wins.
Peters, a 2002 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science. She also received a master’s degree from Jackson State University in health, physical education and recreation. While at Southern Mississippi, Peters played for several nationally ranked (USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association) teams.
“My philosophy is to motivate my student-athletes through the sport and watch those lessons on the field translate into life,” Peters said. “I like to play an aggressive style of softball defensively, we’re really going to get after it, and I want us to be explosive on the offensive end. We’re going to start a new foundation at A&T and build from there.”
