CIAA honors for Rams
The CIAA spread honors around Winston-Salem State Athletic programs last week.
Junior middle hitter Darissa Jones was honored as the Volleyball Player of the Week. She earned the honor after leading the Lady Rams to a 1-1 effort for the week, including leading the team to its third straight CIAA Southern Division victory.
For the week, Jones totaled 14 kills and had a pair of service aces. In addition to her offensive prowess, Jones was also solid defensively with seven total blocks (one solo). She is a native of Mitchellville, Md. and the daughter of Dean and Lisa Morgan.
Several Rams earned football honors.
Offensive lineman Daven Gray, a Kernersville native, was selected as Offensive Lineman of the Week for helping the Rams’ offense account for a whopping 690 yards, including 428 passing and 262 rushing yards in the Rams 56-21 win over Bowie State.
Quarterback Rudy Johnson of San Diego, Calif. was selected as Quarterback of the Week. As of last week, he had finished 20 of 36 for 390 yards and four touchdown passes, while also leading the Rams in rushing.
Tight end and defensive tackle Jerry Chandler of High Point was chosen as Defensive Lineman of the Week. Chandler had a great afternoon against Bowie State, recording four tackles, a tackle for a loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
