Singer Janelle Monae campaigned in Chapel Hill earlier this month for President Barack Obama.

The musically-eclectic Grammy nominated singer headlined a youth summit hosted by Organizing for America, which is dedicated to working to reelect Obama, at UNC Chapel Hill. She later performed at a “Gotta Vote” concert at The Arts Center in nearby Carrboro.

During the Youth Summit and Gotta Vote concert, Monae shared with students that getting registered is the first step to having your vote count. She also enjoyed cake with the students in honor of President Obama’s 51st birthday on Aug. 4.

Gotta Vote is the Obama campaign’s national voter information online resource with answers to common voter questions about where to register, registration deadlines, and polling locations across the country.

Monae is just one of the young stars crisscrossing the country trying to drum up support for the president. Actor Kal Penn, star of the “Harold and Kumar” movies, recently campaigned in Raleigh, while “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” actress Tatyana Ali was slated to appear in Detroit, Mich. over the weekend.

The campaign says it is reminding young voters that President Obama is on their side and pushed for initiatives like the Affordable Care Act, which allows three million more young people have the coverage they need,  and student loan reform to help more college grads get on their feet.
