Sunday School Union to host workshops

Church used to be a central gathering place for African-Americans, serving not only as a place of worship but as a place for social, political and family gatherings as well.

The Forsyth County Sunday School Union wants to bring that tradition back.

The group will host its Focus on the Family Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Family Life Center of Piney Grove Baptist Church, 4633 Grove Garden Drive, where Dr. James F. Linville serves as pastor.

Breakfast will be served from 8 – 8:30 a.m. Workshops for all age groups, including elementary through high-school students, will  be held from 9 a.m. – noon. Workshop topics include responsibility and respect. Special classes will be held for Sunday school teachers and superintendents to help them be more effective in their positions.

All students who pre-register with their churches will receive free school supplies from the FCSSU.   The workshop was planned with this year’s theme, “The Christian Family Upheld in 2012,” in mind.

“We want to help build strong Christian families rooted and grounded in God’s Word,” FCSSU President Minister Velma McCloud said in her monthly newsletter.
