Carver High School and Jacket Integrated Academy were honored on Sept. 25 by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education for making academic progress during the 2011-2012 school year.

Carver and Jacket Integrated Academy, which is based at Carver, were both recognized for making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO).  The awards are given to schools that achieve the academic goals (or targets) set at the beginning of each school year. Carver attained sixteen of the sixteen targets and the Jacket Academy attained five of five targets.

Ronald Travis, principal of both Carver and Jacket Academy, is very proud of the academic progress. He gives a lot of credit to Nathaniel Barber, who served as Carver’s principal from July 2009 through December 2011.

“We must all be reminded that when Mr. Barber and I arrived in 2009, Carver High School was on the state’s failing list,” said Travis. “Our goal was to remove our beloved school from that list. Mr. Barber strongly believed that Carver High School should never be on any failing list of any sort.”

During Barber’s tenure as principal, many teachers were replaced and academic expectations were raised.  During the 2010-2011 school year, Carver met AYP/AMO targets and made the Top Ten Percentage in Composite Gains. Travis is proud that the school has continued the process that Barber began.

“As principal of Carver High, I’m in a fortunate situation.  I  had the pleasure of serving as an assistant principal at Carver High School under the direction of Mr. Daniel Piggott, Mrs. Carol Montague-Davis, (now an assistant superintendent) and Mr. Barber. I learned a great deal from each of these outstanding educators and have the benefit of calling each as a resource.”

Jacket Integrated Academy began in the 2007-08 school year.  Nicole Piggott, now  director of Student Services and Public Relations at Lexington City Schools, was the first and only principal of the Academy prior to Travis taking the helm in March 2011.

“Mrs. Piggott was an outstanding principal. During her tenure as principal of Jacket Integrated Academy, the school made AYP/AMO in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2010, they also made the Top Ten Percentage in Composite Gains,” said Travis, who also praised his assistant principals: Michael Mack, Robin Willard and Barbara Burke. 

“As principal of Carver High School and Jacket Integrated Academy, I can assure all that we have the full support of our school board and central office,” said Travis. “With our primary focus being educating our students, we will continue to improve academically.”
