Novant Health expands beloved neighborhood clinic in East Winston-Salem
Clinic adds new services to multispecialty care location
Novant Health Today’s Adult Primary Care will open the first week of June at the corner of Today’s Woman Avenue and Burton Street in Winston-Salem. If this location sounds familiar, it’s because a well-attended groundbreaking ceremony was held on the lawn of this corner last year to announce the addition of the new clinic and the planned expansion of Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN and Novant Health Today’s Pediatrics, two clinics that have faithfully served patients in the surrounding community for decades.
Fast forward 11 months and you’ll find that another large crowd of excited community members, city officials and Novant Health team members came together earlier today to celebrate the now three-in-one care location.
It all started with an idea 29 years ago. Dr. Larry Hopkins, Mazie Woodruff, an influential community leader and elected official, and Paul Wiles, former CEO of Carolina Medicorp (now Novant Health), recognized a medical provider shortage area in east Forsyth County, specifically in the 27105 ZIP code. These leaders understood that health care must extend beyond the hospital and be accessible to everyone. They also knew more could and should be done to close health equity gaps and support expecting mothers living near Burton Street. So, in 1995 Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN was established in the neighborhood. The clinic, which also houses Novant Health Today’s Pediatrics, has faithfully served generations of mothers and children ever since.
“It’s no secret that our Today’s clinics have established deep roots in this community,” said Joyce Mounce, senior director, Novant Health Community Health & Wellness Institute for the greater Winston-Salem region. “We’re excited to build on this legacy by not only adding a new clinic to the neighborhood that will provide adult primary care and treat men for the first time, but to also expand and renovate our existing clinics. Ultimately, our goal is to grow with the community and to continue to provide accessible, holistic care for our patients close to home.”
Today, the building looks different than it did in 1995. For starters, the new adult primary care space added 2,745-square-feet to the shared clinic space. Patients will also notice that the entire space has a modern design, and the number of exam rooms has nearly doubled.
The on-site community engagement center was also renovated to offer a new multipurpose space for patients to receive additional social support services. The community engagement center is staffed by outreach specialists who can identify nonmedical barriers to care and help patients lead healthier lives. This can include providing education about screenings and prevention, transportation assistance or connecting patients to community resources. The clinic also partners with HealthCare Access, allowing patients to work with a financial navigator to apply for health care coverage.
“We’re starting to witness full-circle generational care at this neighborhood clinic,” said Nicole Brenner, senior director, Novant Health Women’s & Children’s Institute for the greater Winston-Salem market. “I’m truly touched when I hear stories about young girls that grew up in this community and received care at this clinic, now back today as moms with their own children. Additionally, many of our team members have worked at these clinics for a long time, they know these families and a special bond has formed over the years.”
Through the generosity of its donors, the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation has supported Novant Health Today’s clinics since their founding, contributing vital operational resources and transportation assistance for patients. The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Women’s Council also raised funds to support the addition of an on-site ultrasound machine at Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN. This equipment will help to streamline the delivery of care and become available for patients on July 1. Additionally, the foundation board of directors committed $2 million to help establish Novant Health Today’s Adult Primary Care, ensuring family-centered care is available to patients in and around the Boston-Thurmond community.

*Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN provides obstetric and gynecologic services to women of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. The clinic is staffed by OB-GYN-trained providers and offers maternity care, wellness exams and sick care. *Novant Health Today’s Pediatrics provides primary care services for children from birth to age 18. These services include well-child checkups, sick care, physical exams and additional services designed to prevent and treat obesity.
