W-S Street School welcomes record number of students this week
The Winston-Salem Street School is excited to welcome 76 high school and 43 young adult program students through their doors during the first week of the 2024-25 school year.
Students who might have fallen through the proverbial cracks after not finding success in the public school system, have made the decision to earn their diplomas and gain a new lease on life through this unique program. In 20 years, over 350 graduates have realized their dream of completing high school and determining their career paths after committing to the Street School’s programs.
This year, leaders expect nothing less and are excited to serve more students than ever before. This week, students who had all but given up on education will discover the supportive and caring environment that is the Street School.
The Winston-Salem Street School is a private, nonprofit school that serves high school students in Forsyth County who have not found success in the public school environment. The reasons are many; behavioral, mental health and anxiety, bullying, becoming teen parents, poverty, broken homes and families, etc. This population of students are welcomed at the Street School and given a second chance at earning their high school diploma and a “road to hope” for a brighter future.
Since 2004, over 300 students have not only graduated from the Street School, but have received support with food and necessities, counseling, legal support, and help with preparation for life after high school, such as furthering their education and career readiness skills. Currently, Dana Van Horn serves as the Winston-Salem Street School’s Board President.
