The power and necessity of Political Action Committees
By Derwin Montgomery
Political Action Committees (PACs) are often discussed in political circles as both influential and occasionally controversial. However, their primary purpose – to amplify the voices of specific groups in the political process – remains essential to democracy. PACs that prioritize issues important to the people, especially marginalized communities, serve as critical resources that help citizens navigate the often complex electoral landscape, empowering them to make informed voting decisions. The Pink PAC, founded by Quamekia Shavers, provides a compelling example of how a focused PAC can meaningfully contribute to community engagement and voter empowerment.
The Pink PAC was born out of the need to bridge the gap in trusted representation, specifically for Black and brown communities. By endorsing candidates who understand and prioritize the unique challenges these communities face, the PAC ensures that constituents have access to leaders who are both competent and committed. One particularly impactful element of the Pink PAC’s mission is its focus on judicial candidates, a category that often goes unnoticed on ballots yet profoundly influences community justice.
By highlighting judicial candidates, the Pink PAC educates voters on the individuals who may significantly shape their legal environment. This attention to lesser-known yet crucial roles strengthens the community’s understanding of the entire political landscape, beyond high-profile races, and helps voters make comprehensive decisions.
A hallmark of effective PACs is their dedication to voter education and accessibility. The Pink PAC exemplifies this by distributing endorsement cards listing candidates in ballot order, simplifying the voting process for individuals who may not have time to research every candidate. For many voters, navigating lengthy ballots with unfamiliar names can be overwhelming, and PACs that provide clear, organized information help reduce this stress.
In partnership with Carolina Forward, the Pink PAC’s fundraising efforts have enabled nearly 20,000 endorsement cards to reach constituents across Winston-Salem. Distributed by poll workers and canvassers, these cards are invaluable tools that not only guide voters, but also encourage them to exercise their civic rights.
The Pink PAC’s efforts go beyond education and logistics; they foster a sense of community and celebration. For example, on Election Day, the Pink PAC and Carolina Forward will host a free election night party, complete with music, food, and camaraderie, transforming voting into a memorable event. By engaging voters in this celebratory way, the PAC reinforces that their voices matter and their choices have power. The election party will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at ROAR Mayfair Lounge Bar located at 633 N. Liberty Street in Winston-Salem.
Political Action Committees have the potential to be catalysts for meaningful political engagement, especially when they are dedicated to causes that resonate with the people. As voters navigate their choices, PACs serve as guides, advocates and supporters, empowering communities to take part in shaping their future.
