By The Mystery Food Critic

With the closing of the award-winning and highly acclaimed Sweet Potatoes, it’s time to give other restaurants in the city of Winston-Salem and surrounding areas a chance to wow the taste buds and offer that my-kitchen-but-not-my-kitchen type of vibe.

This critic is looking for a go-to spot where the total package (food, atmosphere, location, price and customer service) keeps me coming back.

First stop was only a few doors down from the Sweet Potatoes storefront.

Tucked away on Trade Street in Winston-Salem, The Spotted Cow Steakhouse offers a cozy yet refined dining experience that balances traditional steakhouse food with a welcoming atmosphere. The space opens to a quaint dining area, as well as seats at a well-stocked bar.

Greetings at the door felt like visiting a friend’s house. The warm smiles and salutations predicted a great night of dining. For me, an establishment that has mediocre food with great customer service will always score higher than a restaurant with superb food and poor customer service. However, the Spotted Cow gets a 10/10 from me.  Customer service from arrival to leaving was excellent.

At my visit I ordered their chopped steak with mashed potatoes, a staple dish that, when done right, can showcase both quality ingredients and skilled preparation. It didn’t disappoint. The steak arrived cooked to my preference, boasting a rich, well-seasoned crust that complemented its tender interior. While flavorful, it lacked a bit of depth – perhaps a touch more seasoning or a more pronounced char could have elevated it further. The mashed potatoes were divine. They were well seasoned and brought balance to the plate. Overall, the food gets a 9/10 in my book.

I spent a little over $25 for my dinner, not bad for the great experience I had. Their prices were comparable to other restaurants in the area.

Beyond the food, what truly stood out was the customer service. The staff was attentive without being overbearing, ensuring a seamless dining experience. The restaurant itself exudes warmth, with an inviting ambiance that makes it just as suited for a casual night out as for a special occasion.

Overall, The Spotted Cow delivers a well-rounded dining experience with strong service, a great atmosphere, and reliably good food. Would I return? Absolutely. Check them out.  They are located at 529 Trade Street.
