“The Cha-Cha Slide” pulled ladies to the dance floor, dressed to the nines in yellow, pink, crimson, green, black, navy, royal blue, gold and bronze. C. J. the Deejay (Chris Redd) rocked the house with hot grooves like “Faneto” by Chief Kef, “When I See You” by Fantasia, and “Preach” by Young Dolph. More than 100 students and chaperones gathered at the Second Harvest Food Bank Event Center located at 3330 Shorefair Drive on Saturday, March 29, to enjoy an evening with their classmates and dates.
Principal Thyais Maxwell and Vice Principal Dewayne Tillman crowned the prom royalty during the prom’s intermission. The Prom Prince and Princess are Derrick Reid, Jr. and Ayeka O’Connell. The Prom King and Queen are Kevin Trochez and Johnae Martin.
“I am very proud of the students who participated in the prom this year. I was the Student Government Association adviser this year. For me to be an alumnus of Carver Nation, it made me proud to see the students enjoying themselves,” said Kenny Anderson. “The way the students took pride in their school mad me proud to be a Yellowjacket.”
There were several students and teachers on the prom committee, including the queens of decorations Ms. Alicia Simmons, Ms. Chaundra Simmons, Ms. Crystal Davidson, Ms. Nicole Westbury, Ms. Patricia Hutchinson, and Ms. Kashema Ferguson. Anderson found out about the Event Center and suggested it as a great place for this year’s prom.
“I did the research behind the building. Once I contacted them, they were very collaborative. This was the first time they had ever had a school event there,” said Anderson. “The aesthetics of the building were very pleasing and accessible. The sleekness of the modern amenities is very contemporary and attractive. It is a very diverse space that can be used for dining, for dancing, and for socializing.”
Ms. Ferguson was excited about the outcome of this year’s prom. “Overall, the prom was a major success. I am very proud of the students who came dressed so elegantly.”
The food was good. We served pastas, cupcakes, lemonade, and tea,” Ferguson said. “The setting was just perfect for the number of students who attended. It was a perfect fit for all of us.”
Senior Leslie Barley had a great time at the prom. “I loved it! I was excited that everybody kept the peace. We danced and had a good time,” Barley said.
Senior Jeremiah Ferguson was glad that he came out with his lady. “I wore sage green and my girl wore emerald green. I felt like I was that man!” Ferguson said.
Biology teacher Mian Goldsbrough summed it up: “It was a positive night. A night to remember. So many good memories were created.”
