*North Carolina Blues Week, May 10-18, organized by The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society, will include a screening of the documentary “The Blues Society” on Thursday, May 15, 7 p.m., at the Van Dyke Performance Space located on the first floor of the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. David St. General admission is $10. Filmgoers and Blues enthusiasts alike are in for a cinema experience that includes a virtual conversation with director Augusta Palmer. In addition, a short film and tribute to the great Big Ron Hunter will be shown.
“The Blues Society” is a moving image mixtape about a blues festival held in Memphis, Tennessee, during the 1960s. Unforgettable performances from Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins combine with archival footage, animation, and interviews with participants, organizers, and musicians.
*Join Emily Baker, manager of community and academic learning at Reynolda House Museum of American art, on Thursday, May 15, at 10 a.m., to learn about a work of art from the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School was a 19th century art movement that emphasized the beauty of nature and landscapes and features prominently in Reynolda’s permanent collection. This brief art historical lesson and close examination of an art selection will take place at Reynolda House, 2250 Reynolda Road, followed by an art activity inspired by the Hudson River School artists that fosters creative thinking and exploration. *Join the Winston-Salem Pops Chorus on Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium at Ardmore Baptist Church for the concert “Give Our Regards to Old Broadway.” The W-S Pops Chorus performs four-part arrangements of “well-seasoned” Pops songs (mid 1930s – early 1970s) that have stood the test of time to become familiar standards, including Big Band, Swing, Jazz and The Great American Songbook. Their spring concert celebrates a century of songs from the Great White Way, covering Broadway musicals from the early 1900s through the early 2000s. In addition to the full 32-voice mixed chorus, the show will feature numbers from the “POPouts,” a small ensemble of auditioned voices, along with solos and duets from individual group members.
*The second annual Blooming Together Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Generations Center, 114 W. 30th St. Join us for a celebration of intergenerational creativity from 4 to 94. Come experience an international cooking demonstration, musical performances, multi-cultural dances, spoken word performances, and opportunities to participate in hands-on arts activities. *Join Reynolda curator Allison Slaby on Saturday, May 17, 1-2 p.m., for an intimate look at Reynolda’s spring 2025 exhibition “Andrew Wyeth at Kuerner Farm: The Eye of the Earth” before it leaves to travel to the Brandywine Museum of Art later this summer. *On May 17 a5 3 p.m., in celebration of 160 years of freedom, Triad Cultural Arts will proudly present “On the Way to Freedom Day – A Journey in Song,” a powerful, multimedia performance by acclaimed artist Nailah Porter – vocalist, composer, poet, photographer and educator. This immersive experience of poetry, music and dance is a sacred production intended to honor the ancestors and a tribute to the enduring legacy of liberation. The production will be held on Saturday, May 17, at St. Philips Moravian Church, 911 S. Church St. in Old Salem. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the event begins at 3 p.m. Admission is free
