A pair of local funnymen will headline a benefit for Justice Marathon, a program that benefits inmates and their families.
“An Evening of Elegance at Christmas Time” will be held at Life Changing Transformation Church Ministries, 2001 E. 25th St., on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. Comedians Dion Fowler and James Lyons will perform. Fowler is a city native whose comic stylings have made him a must-book act for birthday parties, anniversaries and hair and award shows. He has opened for J. Anthony Brown on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and regularly hosts showcases for budding local comedians. Lyons is best known for his sidesplitting personas Uncle Ezell and Pastor Doo Right. His style has made him popular at local church events.
The program will also feature The Anointed Singers, Carolyn Cross, Desma Archie, Alecia Mitchell and Alice Faye Mitchell, pastor of Life Changing Transformation Church Ministries and founder of Justice Marathon. Worship dancers Willa Powell, Kiva Blair and Morgan Collins will perform as well.
Admission to the event is $5.
At its center at Life Changing Transformation Church, Justice Marathon provides tutoring, literacy and life skills, computers and WiFi access for youngsters, many of whom have parents who are incarcerated.
“I do a lot of prison ministry and I saw that the help needed to go to other areas as well,” Pastor Mitchell told The Chronicle earlier this year, describing why she started Justice Marathon. “There are so many parents, male and female, in the jail system and the children have to go on with grandparents raising them. We organized the center because we already dealt with the children that the inmates have had to leave behind.”
