As the year 2024 comes to an end in Winston-Salem

The year 2024 will be memorable for all of us, particularly for the city of Winston-Salem. Like many cities, regardless of their size, we have faced numerous challenges that have tested our resilience and unity as a community.
This year, we have grappled with housing and homelessness, poverty, economic shifts, social concerns, crime, environmental concerns, transportation, workforce training, and education. I could create a list longer than my arm. Each challenge has highlighted the issues we face and sparked critical conversations about how we can collectively address them.
One notable example was the Behavioral Evaluation and Response Team (BEAR). The BEAR team was established in response to community concerns that the presence of uniformed first responders during mental health calls often escalated the situation. This initiative brought together residents, local leaders, and organizations in a commendable effort to find solutions. It has reminded us of our strength as a community when we come together to support one another. As we move forward, we must learn from these experiences. Let us embrace the spirit of collaboration and innovation that Winston-Salem has always been known for. We can create initiatives that enhance our quality of life, promote inclusivity, and ensure sustainable growth for all our citizens.
In reflecting on this year, I believe in engaging in ongoing dialogues about our priorities and aspirations for the future. As elected officials, we must ensure our citizens are educated and aware of our actions.
Let’s harness the lessons learned from our challenges to forge a path toward a brighter, more equitable future for Winston-Salem. We have a new city council, city cttorney, and staff. In 2025, let us focus more on humanity and civility. Together, we can create systems change. Many organizations and groups are working to make the necessary changes because outdated systems have affected lives.
I look forward to seeing the Winston-Salem Chronicle continue highlighting the voices and stories within our community to help us be better.
