The Old Hickory Council, Boy Scouts of America has held a kickoff activity with young boys and girls at The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on Reynolds Park Road to provide Scouting programs to youth in need. This is the beginning of the Boy Scouts of America’s renewed commitment (post COVID) to provide positive adult role models and life skills to ALL youth regardless of financial capability and family structure.

Young boys and girls at the kickoff participated in team building activities, explored a model campsite, enjoyed cobbler with ice cream, and learned about the upcoming activities at the center and at Camp Raven Knob.

To join Scouting at the Boys and Girls Club or to find other new opportunities, contact Virgil Lessane at Virgil.Lessane@Scouting.org or 336-760-2900. You may also visit www.BeAScout.org.

Scouting’s programs have had a positive impact on the character and economic welfare of Scouts as shown in a study reported by Harris Interactive:

*More than eight of 10 Scouts (82%) say saving money for the future is a priority of theirs.

*Youth who were Scouts five years or more have an average household income of $80,000 compared to $61,000 reported by men who have never been Scouts.

*74% of youth who were Scouts own their own homes, compared to 65% who were never Scouts.

*91% of youth who were Scouts 5+ years completed high school compared with 87% of youth who were never Scouts.

*Over 2/3 of youth who were Scouts attribute some of their self-confidence in their work to having been a Scout.

*Adults with Scouting backgrounds say Scouting has had a positive impact on their ability to work as a team, improved their family life at the time they were Scouts, and has helped them have a happier family life today (47% vs 29%).

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Old Hickory Council offers programs to young men and women in eight counties in Northwest North Carolina. We serve nearly 2,800 youth and support 1,200 registered volunteers.
