Carver names Holmes head football coach

Carver High School has hired a new head football coach. In a social media post made last week, it was announced that Cornelius Holmes has been named head coach of the Yellowjackets.
While speaking with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) marketing department shortly after being introduced as the new head coach, Holmes said, “I wanted to be at Carver, I’m glad I’m here … and this is where I need to be.”
Holmes stepped in last October to lead the Yellowjackets as interim head coach. Under his leadership over the final four games of the season, Carver went 2-2, picking up wins over Pine Lake Prep and rival Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. The Yellowjackets finished the season 4-7, and finished sixth in their conference.
A native of Detroit, Holmes played four seasons at Winston-Salem State University for Rams legend Bill Hayes. Like dozens of others who played for him, Holmes said Hayes played a major role in helping him become the man he is today. After earning his degree in public administration, Holmes went on to work for the Winston-Salem Fire Department. He retired in 2016 as a captain after 30 years of service.
Hayes joined Holmes at Carver when the announcement was made last week. Hayes said Carver and the district got it right by hiring Holmes.
“Thank you Carver, thank you AD for being smart enough to make this move with this guy because he’s the real deal,” Hayes said.
