Shirley McCall Fennell, 76, a revered icon in the civil rights movement, a staunch advocate for equality, and a beloved figure in the Winston-Salem community, passed away on Dec. 23 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Kwanzaa was created out of the philosophy of Kawaida, which is a cultural nationalist philosophy that argues that the key challenge in Black peoples’ lives is the challenge of culture and that what Africans must do is to discover and bring forth the best of their culture, both ancient and current, and use it as a foundation to bring into being models of human excellence and possibilities to enrich and expand our lives.
The future of local high school basketball will be on full display next week during the 2023 David Lash/Chronicle Tournament. The tournament, featuring some of the best JV (junior varsity) teams in the area, will be held Dec. 27-29 at Carver High School and Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy.
