Ever since she was a young girl growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Lauranita Katende dabbled in sewing, knitting and embroidery, skills she picked up from her Aunt Gladys when she was only ten years old. It wasn’t until 2010 that she decided to turn those skills into a business, after she decided to sew something special for Aunt Gladys’s 90th birthday. Katende said that a gift for her aunt sparked an idea and Ita Designs was born.

The scholarship committee of the Winston-Salem Chapter of the NAACP will award five scholarships in the amount of $500 each to five selected students of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system. Amongst all recipients, the student who achieved the highest scholastic standing and provided outstanding service to their community will receive the Reverend Dr. Carlton A. Eversley award.

The Mt. Tabor Spartans had a down year last season based on their usual standards, going 4-5 overall. Spartan head coach Tiesuan Brown was not pleased with the win/loss record but was happy with the development of several players and is very optimistic about the Spartans bouncing back this year.

When you see people sporting purple and black attire on the streets of Winston-Salem, you know it’s time for the National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF). The festival will hold their 17th biennial event from Aug. 1-6. Rodney Williams is a long-time fan of the NBTF and will have his short film debut at this year’s event.
Every two years since 1989, the North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NBRC) and the City of Winston-Salem roll out the red carpet and invite creatives and lovers of live theatre from across the globe to the City of Arts and Innovation, for a week long ‘marvtastic’ celebration of Black arts during the National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF). Due to the pandemic, the festival was postponed last year, but this year the festival is back!
