More than 60 Carver High School students and educators stood in line to get their hair shaped up or groomed for graduation day when 16 students from the Winston-Salem Barber School volunteered four hours of their time to serve the Yellow Jackets on Friday, June 9. Bryce Sherman, an alumnus of Carver High School and youth violence prevention manager of the City of Winston-Salem and Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks, collaborated with LaTonya Moore, the director of the Winston-Salem Barber School on Silas Creek Parkway to combat violence in our schools.
Culture Day continues to develop at Carver Nation
More than 180 students and educators attended Carver High School’s prom on Saturday, May 20, at the Hawthorne Inn. The theme for the evening was “Casino Night 2023″.
Kids aged 12-18 who enjoy music and are interested in learning more about Blues music have an opportunity to receive world-class instruction for free at the 3rd annual Kids Blues Camp NC sponsored by Delta Arts Center, Dr. Myron Brown and the Winston-Salem State University music department, and Fernando Jones and the Blues Kids Foundation.
When it comes to showing school spirit and giving back to their alma mater, not many schools can compare with the alumni from Carver High School. To show their love for Carver, a few months ago several alumni formed a nonprofit to support various events, initiatives and programs at the school.
For nearly a decade Joyce Hairston, director at Ephesus Learning Center, has supported Crisis Control Ministry’s Wee Care! Cereal Drive and this year Hairston made her biggest donation yet – 115 boxes of cereal.
At Cook Literacy Model School, instead of having a traditional Book Fair, this year they opted for a Book Giveaway where every student in the school received a book for free. The event was made possible by the Reynolda Rotary Club.
To help build the teacher pipeline here in Forsyth County, The Pre-K Priority, a local collaboration of community organizations committed to early childhood education, launched its Be First initiative including online resources, community advertising and social media to encourage individuals to consider careers in early childhood education.
The intersection of Cherry and 25th Streets will now and forever be known as Mildred R. Griffin Way.
