Choir celebrating anniversary Sunday
The Mount Zion Baptist Church Inspiration Choir will celebrate its 37th choir anniversary on Sunday, July 20 at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The anniversary theme is “Hymns Revived – Our God Be Glorified.”
The choirs from Emmanuel Baptist Church, Friendship Baptist Church and New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church will also take part.
This year, the program is given in honor of two dedicated church members, the late Dr. Maya Angelou and the late Melvyne Davenport, who passed away in May. Davenport was a fully-committed choir member who participated faithfully in many of the choir’s events, activities and singing engagements.
Dr. Angelou, who passed away in May, invited the Inspirational Choir to perform at several special events. Dr. Angelou often called the Inspirational Choir “her choir.”
The Rev. Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. is the pastor of Mount Zion. The choir president is Carrie Loftin. The choir’s musicians are Dionn Owen, director; Everette Funches, percussionist; and Kevin Scott, pianist.
Mount Zion Baptist Church is at 950 File St.
