The Be Healthy Coalition of the Forsyth County Department of Public Health will hold free screenings of the HBO documentary series “The Weight of the Nation” throughout the month of March.

The series tackles the nation’s ongoing obesity problem. According to statistics, 68 percent of American adults are overweight or obese, while 31.7 percent of the nation’s children and adolescents have issues with weight. Obesity contributes to five of the 10 leading causes of death in America, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, many cancers and stroke.

“The Weight of the Nation” addresses the problem in four documentary films featuring case studies and interviews with leading experts and with families and individuals who struggle with obesity. The film series was developed in partnership with the Institute of Medicine, in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

One part of the documentary film will be shown every Wednesday during March at a/perture Cinema from 12:30–2 p.m. The doors at a/perture will open at noon. There is no charge to attend a film screening. Following the screening of each part of the series, a Q&A and discussion with local experts will be held. A different film will be shown each week focusing on different aspects of the obesity epidemic.
