Former director of Miller Park sentenced to a minimum of 27 years for sexually assaulting a minor

The former director of Miller Park Community Center was found guilty on three counts of statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult offender and two counts of indecent liberties with a child.
According to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office, on Sep. 1, 2018 the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) received a call from Brenner Children’s Hospital. Upon arrival officers with the WSPD learned that an 8-year-old boy reported that he was sexually assaulted by David Walter Edge, 44. The victim attended an after-school program at Miller Park Community Center.
Evidence showed that on Aug. 31, the victim was the last child at Miller Park to be picked up. Evidence also showed that victim was left alone with Edge when the only other staff member left to do cleaning an other tasks to close the building. The victim reported that once the ofter staff member left, Edge Called him into a room, choked him and threatened to kill him.
The district attorney’s office said Edge then sexually assaulted the victim multiple times. The assault ended when Edge saw someone arriving at the center to pick the victim up.
Forsyth County Assistant District Attorney Kia Chavious, who prosecuted the case, spoke on behalf of the victim. She told the court, “This was a vicious attack perpetrated on a defenseless child by someone who was supposed to provide care.”
Superior Court Judge Joseph H. Crosswhite, who presided over Edge’s case, sentenced him to 27-39 year in the NC Department of Corrections. The defendant will be ordered to register as a sex-offender on the NC Sex Offender Registry and he will have to undergo satellite-based monitoring for the rest of his life.
