Former Forsyth County Commissioner Beaufort Bailey dies
Former Forsyth County Commissioner Beaufort O. Bailey died today, Thursday, Feb. 22, it was announced at a gathering of commissioners this morning. He was a commissioner for eight years before being defeated by fellow Democrat Everette Witherspoon by only 95 votes in 2010.
Bailey was a media specialist for 35 years at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) and alumni president for eight years. He was an elementary teacher for 10 years and the first African American to be elected to the School Board of Forsyth County. He was on the board for 12 years.
Bailey was is a member of the Educational Media Association, National Commissioners Association, and was Forsyth County Community College Board trustee for 16 years.
Visitation for Bailey will be at Greater Church, 5059 Lansing Dr., from 11 a.m.-12 p.m on Monday, Feb. 26. The funeral will be held there starting at noon.
