From chaos to campus: A local parent’s guide to Move-in Day in Winston-Salem

It starts with a list. Then it snowballs into a shopping cart, a storage bin, a color-coordinated Pinterest board, and about four Target runs.

For families across Winston-Salem, move-in season is more than just a college tradition – it’s an emotional rollercoaster filled with nerves, pride, and an SUV full of “just in case” items.

Whether your student is heading to Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) or Wake Forest University (WFU), one question comes up every year: What do they actually need?

Must-Haves vs. Nice-to-Haves. Before you blow your budget or start ordering peel-and-stick wallpaper, let’s talk essentials.

The Must-Haves:

*Bedding: Twin XL sheets, a mattress protector, pillows, and a good comforter

*Laundry gear: Hamper, detergent pods, and something to dry clothes on

*Bathroom basics: Shower caddy, flip-flops, and towels

*Tech: Laptop, charger, power strip

*Storage: Under-bed bins, command hooks, closet organizers

The Nice-to-Haves:

*Mini-fridge or microwave (check dorm rules – each school is different)

*Decor items like LED lights, pillows, or rugs

*Small appliances like a fan, coffee maker, or electric kettle (only if allowed)

To Glam or Not to Glam?

Every August, Instagram fills up with dorm rooms that look like luxury condos. But here’s the truth: a cozy, functional space beats a glamorous one every time – especially when you’re working with shared closets and cinderblock walls.

At WSSU, many first-year students live in traditional double rooms with limited space, so smart storage is key. At Wake Forest, the suite-style dorms offer a little more breathing room, but they’re still standard student living spaces – not interior design showrooms.

But If You’re Going to Glam It Up …

We get it – your student wants to feel at home, and maybe you do too. If you’re going to add a little flair, focus on items that bring comfort, personality, and function:

*Removable wallpaper or decals: Adds style without damaging walls

*Coordinated bedding sets: Reflect your student’s personality

*Velvet or tufted headboards: Lightweight and dorm-safe

*Soft lighting: LED strip lights or battery-operated lamps

*Area rugs: Instantly warm up tile floors and define space

*Matching storage bins: Keeps things tidy and stylish

Just remember: trends fade, but tuition is real. Keep the glam within reason and make sure your student can live in the space – not just show it off.

How Move-In Works on Campus

*At WSSU, move-in is full of Ram pride and community energy. First-year students typically move in on assigned dates, with volunteers and staff ready to help unload cars and get families settled. It’s loud, it’s organized chaos – and it’s beautiful to witness.

*At WFU, move-in runs like a well-oiled machine. Students are given specific time slots, and volunteers help move belongings quickly. Parents can take a deep breath knowing their student is in good hands from day one.

Real Talk: Tips from Local Families

*Pack light, but smart. Prioritize first-week basics. You can always send or bring more later.

*Coordinate with roommates to avoid duplicates. No one needs two mini-fridges and four lamps.

*Get to know campus resources like Rams Central at WSSU or the Deacon OneCard office at WFU. They’ll be lifelines during the first semester.

*Don’t forget emotional support. A handwritten letter, a photo from home, or a small token of love goes a long way when homesickness hits.

Final Thoughts (and a Fun Invite!)

Move-in day in Winston-Salem is more than just unloading boxes – it’s a milestone moment for families and a powerful symbol of hope, growth and legacy. Whether your child is the first in your family to attend college or continuing a tradition of excellence, remember this:

They don’t need a designer dorm. They need your encouragement, your prayers, and your belief that they are ready.

So, grab that last roll of duct tape, snap the “Room 217” photo, and hug them tight. Then let go – just enough – for them to rise.

And while you’re at it, send us those dorm room glow-ups!
Whether you went full-on glam or kept it simple and stylish, The Chronicle wants to feature your student’s decorated space on our social media.
