Full WSSU squad begins practices
The Winston-Salem State University football team began prepping late last week for the 2013 season. Head Coach Connell Maynor and staff welcomed about 110 players to campus for a preseason camp on Aug. 9.
The full squad took to the field for the first time Monday. The team’s only two-a-day practices will be on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Rams will be formally introduced to the public at “Meet the Rams Day” on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the Blair Hall Plaza on the WSSU campus.
The Rams’ 2013 season opens on Sept. 5, when the team travels to UNC Pembroke for an 8 p.m. game.
The Rams return nine starters and 53 lettermen from last season, including preseason All-Americans and 2012 Defensive Player of the Year Carlos Fields Jr. and offensive lineman Nathaniel Hartung.
The Rams — coming off the most successful season in HBCU history — were recently chosen to three-peat as CIAA champions. The team has been selected sixth on Lindy’s Football Annual Division II preseason poll and 11th on The Sporting News’ poll.
