Winston-Salem native Fay Hauser-Price will screen two of her short films during the National Black Theatre Festival’s film festival.

Hauser-Price is a veteran actress whose credits include “Roots: The Next Generation,” “The Young and The Restless,” “Good Times” and “Candy Man II.” Lately, she has been spending a lot of time behind the camera. “Where There’s Smoke…” and “5150” will be shown on Wednesday, July 31 at 12:05 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively, at the Central Library, 660 W. 5th St.

“It’s always good to come home and share what I have learned and experienced in my years of acting and directing on the national stage, and I look forward to sharing my directing talents with the community who nurtured me,” Hauser-Price said.

“Where There’s Smoke…” is packed with suspense, reflection, love and politics set in the turbulence of 1977 America, as the black and white communities struggled with race relations here and in South Africa. Nelson Mandela is imprisoned and the film’s characters, an African American and a South African, struggle with the most effective method of liberation. The stars of the film are Kofi Natei and Gayle Brown. It is narrated by Hauser-Price.

“5150” is a contemporary tale that takes a look at what happens when one gets entangled in the “system,” when the authorities place on restraints unjustifiably.

In the 30-minute film, Joi Devereux is amid a menagerie of strange characters, while being held for 72 hours in a mental hospital. She learns what it takes to maintain sanity and win back her freedom to live in the outside world. It stars Randa Walker and Vanessa Williams.

“Shooting this film was a joy!” Hauser-Price said. “The cast and crew were exceptional as we worked on this no-budget-film. The results can stand side by side with other higher budgeted projects. It just shows that if there is a will, there is a way to get your ideas out there.”
