Hometown champ to take on fighting beast from Guyana
“The Trilogy” is being billed as a first-of-its-kind pro female boxing showcase.
Slated for Saturday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Annex, the event’s first bout will feature two of the world’s premier female boxers – Gwendolyn “Stealth Bomber” O’Neil and Winston-Salem’s own Carlette “The Truth” Ewell. The duo have had a tumultuous past.
On June 6, 2008 in St. Maartin, Netherlands Antilles, O’Neil, a native of Georgetown, Guyana, defeated Ewell in a 10-round split-decision. In November of that year, a rematch was held, also in St. Maartin, with Ewell getting the unanimous decision after 10-rounds.
Ewell is coming off a series of several big wins. She took the UNBC Heavyweight title in 2010 after beating Tiffany Woodard at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. She beat Woodard again the next year in Greensboro.
In January, Ewell won a thriller, winning a split-decision over Sonya Lamonakis at the Roseland Ballroom in New York and moving her record to 15-7-1 (9 KO’s).
Advance tickets to the event start at $25. Tickets start at $35 at the door. To purchase tickets to the event, call 336-695-7585 or 917-940-2221 or go to ticketmaster.com.
