Jansen’s A&T’s first Goldwater Scholar
Nadine Jansen, a rising senior mathematics major at North Carolina A&T State University, is the institution’s first student to receive the Barry Goldwater Scholarship.
The Goldwater Scholarship application is an intensive application. Jansen was required to answer a loaded questionnaire and submit a two-page research essay. She wrote her application essay on the mathematical research that she conducted during a summer program at the University of Maryland – College Park in combinatorics.
“Combinatorics is a field of math that investigates different ways to count items,” said Jansen, a Stoneville native and a member of the university’s Honors Program.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who show a strong commitment to a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering and potential to make a significant contribution in their field of study. To qualify, students must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national or permanent resident, a sophomore or junior, and have a 3.0 GPA and be in the top 25 percent of their class.
