‘Jerry’ to attend grand opening
Jerry Greenfield will be on hand Saturday (March 29) for the grand opening of the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop in The Shoppes at Friendly Center at 3332 West Friendly Ave. in Greensboro. Activities, which will include family activities, games and appearances by local celebrities will be held from noon – 8 p.m. Greenfield is expected to be around during the early afternoon.
“It’s like a kid’s dream come true, to open an ice cream shop in Greensboro and to have Jerry joining in on the fun is going to make it extra special,” said Antonio McBroom, owner of the Greensboro Scoop Shop. “We want to show our gratitude in true Ben & Jerry’s fashion: with a fun-filled event that benefits the community, because that’s what our business is about.”
Greenfield cofounded the iconic Ben & Jerry’s brand with Ben Cohen in the late 1970s. The pair opened their first Scoop Shop in Burlington, Vt., where the company is still based. Ben & Jerry’s produces a wide variety of super-premium ice cream and ice cream novelties. The company is known for using high-quality ingredients, including milk and cream from family farmers who do not treat their cows with the synthetic hormone rBGH. Ben and Jerry’s products are distributed nationwide and in selected foreign countries in supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, franchise Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops, restaurants and other venues. Ben & Jerry’s also has a strong philanthropic arm. Contributions made via the employee-led Ben & Jerry’s Foundation in 2011 totaled $1.98 million. Additionally, the company makes significant product donations to community groups and nonprofits both in Vermont and across the nation.
“I’m looking forward to becoming really involved in the local business community,” McBroom said. “We hope everyone attends our opening celebration and gets a chance to try their favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor! It’s great ice cream for a great cause. You can’t lick that!”
