Lloyd Presbyterian Church to begin new Sunday afternoon service
December 14
15:00 2024

On January 5, 2025, Lloyd Presbyterian Church will begin holding worship services each Sunday at 3 p.m.  This is an exciting effort to revitalize and expand this historic congregation that is the Mother Church to Black Presbyterian congregations in the Winston-Salem area. The worship and communion service on Jan. 5 will be led by Rev. Timothy Bates, who is the pastor of Cameron and Calvary Presbyterian churches in Statesville, North Carolina.

Listed on the National Register of Historic places, Mother Lloyd is also one of the oldest church structures in downtown Winston-Salem. Lloyd was formed in 1870 as part of a national movement by the northern missionaries to establish African American Presbyterian churches in the South after the Civil War.  Lloyd’s first members were originally members of First Presbyterian Church, Winston Salem.

Lloyd, once considered to be the hub of Black community, survived the urban renewal that destroyed the thriving Black businesses along the Highway 52 corridor.  Lloyd is a member of Salem Presbytery and continues to do outreach to the local community and to a children’s home and school in Ngong Kenya through the Sister to Sister International Outreach Ministry that brings wholeness into the broken lives of women and children in the region.  The entire community is invited to come celebrate this new beginning with Lloyd, as we reach out to the Winston-Salem community and continue the historic legacy of Lloyd Presbyterian Church by providing a variety of ministries to serve future generations.

For more information, contact Purity Ruchugo at 336-655-0347 or Elder Rachel Jackson at 336-391-8335. The church is located at 748 North Chestnut Street.
