For the second year in a row, the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) and the Winston-Salem Police Foundation helped local students prepare for the upcoming school year by sponsoring a supply giveaway. This year, police officers handed 1,500 backpacks at four different locations in the city.
At the giveaway at the Winston Mutual Building, more than 500 people showed up nearly an hour before the event was scheduled to begin. While they waited, children talked with local police officers about the upcoming school year.
Chief Barry Rountree was also on hand to chat with students and families.
