Members of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.- Beta Lambda, held a retreat last week for its members. The sorority, comprised of female educators in the city, focuses on the enlightenment and education of young people.

The retreat, held at the Embassy Suites, centered on the theme of social and emotional learning (SEL). Educators have known for many years the importance of SEL on a child’s educational and emotional development. Dr. Patsy Squire led the discussion of SEL and facilitated an engaging discussion on the interrelated areas of emotional awareness, social interaction, and self-regulation as critical tools for helping children reach their fullest potential.

Additional activities on SEL were conducted by local school counselors Diletta Mouzon, Rinita Williams and Clarissa Felder. The women also participated in relationship building activities as part of their professional and personal development.

President Donna Mickens said that the retreat was a wonderful way for the members of the organization to get together and learn more ways to support children, as well as empower and inspire each other.
