Mayor Allen Joines to seek reelection in 2020
Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines has announced that he will seek reelection in 2020 for another four-year term. First elected in 2001, Joines has been reelected four times as the city’s mayor.
Joines identified several key priorities for his next term. If re-elected, Mayor Joines plans to concentrate on a number of critical initiatives during the next four years:
*Continue to grow the economy. Particularly in the area of small business start-up and growth, minority and women owned businesses, and the city’s growing technology sector.
*Complete the work of the Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness. During Joines time in office chronic homelessness has been reduce by 92%.
*Reducing the level of poverty in our community by implementing the Pathways to Prosperity Plan with a concentrated focus on children living in poverty.
*Provide an opportunity for any student graduating from a Forsyth County high school to go to Forsyth Technical Community College at no cost, if they are unable to afford the tuition and fees.
*Focus on the critical need for affordable housing. It is estimated that Winston Salem will need over 5,500 new affordable units in the next eight years.
*Continue to provide the leadership that has brought our community together.
“It is the opportunities we have in front of us that give me the energy and passion to want to continue to serve the residents of Winston-Salem. I am as excited and enthusiastic now as I was when I first ran,” Joines said. “Since I’ve been mayor, my goal has been to bring our community together so we can make our city among the best mid-sized cities in the nation.”
