Native earns first victory in hometown
Winston-Salem native Ryan Newman earned his first collegiate victory last Friday in the first day of action at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Newman, a N.C. State freshman, upset second-seeded Peter Pello of Norfolk State in his round of 16 match in the C1 draw, 6-3, 6-3. He captured his second victory the following day, taking a thrilling three-set victory over Iowa’s Joey White, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Newman lost in a walkover on Sunday to Liberty’s Alex Liamas.
Rated as a four-star recruit out of Boca Prep International, the third top prospect in North Carolina and 98th in the nation, Newman compiled a 15-8 overall record, including a 6-1 mark against four-star recruits as a junior player. He captured the SVG ITF Junior doubles title in August 2011 with partner Adrian de Silva.
The WFU Invitational brought some of the nation’s best collegiate tennis talent to Winston-Salem. Host WFU fared well. Freshman Maksim Kan won the championship in the top singles flight and Sam Bloom took home the title in the B flight.

Coming off of the best victory of his career against North Carolina’s No. 28 Esben Hess-Olesen, Kan finished the job on Sunday, beating Duke’s Josh Levine 6-3, 7-5 in the A1 Singles final.
Bloom rallied after a tough first set in the B1 Singles final to take down Penn State’s Marc Collado Castells 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.
