“Truth and SERVICE” is North Carolina Central University’s motto. Friday, July 12, was recognized as the 10th National Day of Service at the University. The Day of Service began in 2010 when the University celebrated its centennial. Several years ago, it was decided that local alumni chapters could perform the Day of Service locally.

On Friday, July 12, members of the Winston-Salem Chapter of NCCU AA began arriving at 1970 Baldwin lane, the location of the SECU Family House. The SECU Family House provides affordable lodging and support services in a caring environment for referred adult patients and caregivers traveling to Winston-Salem for medical care at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, or Trellis Supportive Care.

The Eagles arrived to bring a home-cooked dinner for the residents of the Family House, where they were warmly received by the staff and shown to a state-of-the-art kitchen. The Eagles donned maroon and gray aprons and organized the meal of rotisserie chicken, green beans, scalloped potatoes, a tossed vegetable salad, Hawaiian rolls, pineapple upside down cake, sweet potato pie, tea, lemonade, and water.  One of the residents brought a lemon meringue pie.

The prayer/grace was given by the chapter chaplain and “Happy Birthday” was sung to a resident. All present ate and leftovers were packaged for those residents who would arrive later or who would want a late-night snack. Cleanup was done and the Eagles’ spirits “soared” as they departed with hearts warmed by their SERVICE and with plans to continue this relationship.
