New book earns award for Salem professor

Salem College Assistant Professor of History Dr. Tekla Ali Johnson was honored with a book award from the National Council of Black Studies (NCBS) for her recently published book, “Free Radical: Ernest Chambers, Black Power and the Politics of Race.”
Ali Johnson was honored at the NCBS national convention in Indianapolis, IN. The award recognizes outstanding scholarly publications in the realm of Africana studies. “This award is an affirmation that the work that we frequently do in isolation has a higher purpose,” says Dr. Ali Johnson. “It is also a confirmation of the importance of speaking our vision of the world. Receiving this award ‘for outstanding scholarly publication in Africana studies’ is a highlight of my academic career. Thank you, National Council of Black Studies.”
Ali Johnson earned a Ph.D. in history with an emphasis in African American studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has served as an instructor of African American history at NC A&T State University in Greensboro, and at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, where she was coordinator of the African and African American studies minor, coordinator of the history program, and was the co-founder of an emerging concentration in public history.
The NCBS is the leading organization of black studies professionals in the world. For more than 30 years, the organization has been at the forefront of driving the development of black/Africana studies as a respected academic discipline.
