The Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated Founders’ Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, at WFU Bridger Fieldhouse. The room was awash in beautiful pink and green. 

Chapter president Nora Baker gave greetings and a warm welcome. Also in attendance was the 15th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Dr. Caroline Lattimore.

Phi Omega members and guests enjoyed a luncheon with guest speaker, Rhonda Foxx. Ms. Foxx challenged members to be involved and vote. Over 150 sorority members were in attendance. Phi Omega chorus and Keith Byrd provided entertainment. Event co-chairs, Beth Day-Hairston and Kim Reynolds, were applauded for a wonderful event.

Sorority members in Phi Omega began the chapter’s 96th year in Winston-Salem with service projects in January and February that included a clothing giveaway and a soup luncheon for homeless citizens, as well as attending the Martin Luther King, Jr. Noon Hour Commemoration service held at Union Baptist Church. Phi Omega members also attended the Winston-Salem Goes Red heart health breakfast at Novant Health and read to students at Center of Hope.

This year Alpha Kappa Alpha marks its 112th year after being founded on the Howard University campus in 1908. It was the first Greek letter sorority for African American women. Phi Omega chapter was started in Winston-Salem on Feb. 14, 1924.
