Playhouse to stage “Fences”
In Honor of Black History Month, the Stained Glass Playhouse presents August Wilson’s “Fences.”
The play, which won a Pulitzer and Tony Award for Best Play in 1987, centers around Troy Maxson, who has gone through life in a country where to be proud and black was to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s. It’s a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less.
The Stained Glass Playhouse’s production, directed by Jae Campbell, is being staged in conjunction with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
Troy Maxon will be portrayed by Nick Nickson, and Tenesia Turner will play his wife, Rose. Troy’s son from a previous marriage, Lyons, is played by Andrew Sheran, while Troy and Rose’s son, Cory, is performed by Ryan Johnson. Timothy W. Howell plays Troy’s brother, Gabriel; his friend, Jim Bono, is played by Harold V. Clayton Jr. Troy’s daughter, Raynell, is played by eight-year-old Zoei Belcher.
Performances will be on Feb. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m., and Feb. 3, 10 and 17 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors over 60.
